Extreme Spiritual Make Over

Copyright © 2013 Robert Owens-Greygrass

As I think about it, that little voice inside says hmmm, this is supposed to funny, enlightening, very serious business, and yet, life is full of not so funny things. But an extreme spiritual make over is sorta funny. Even though we modern pitiful humans are in a not so funny place in time; it might be that things are getting too complicated at this time on mother earth. Or maybe life, creation, arts, politics, and spiritual knowledge is just too hard for me to really understand, consequently I need to write about it to make sense to myself. Maybe.

I hope to inspire and provoke some not so new ideas and to further the collective human consciousness. That is a big order and I may be in over my head, but I will give it a go. Looking at some of the “leadership” in the world today I am nearly as qualified as the next and maybe more so than some. Native American thought and ideas are largely left out of the mainstream and in general left out of the western cannon of great philosophy and literature; with only a cursory comment or reference here and there. Anthropological and Hollywood thoughts that make you go hmmm.

I am a student of any and all great thinkers. Native American philosophical ways are reasonable and encourage an inclusive way of learning, synthesizing and then integrating any and all good truth into our lives. It is my hope that as we (the human family) grows collectively in consciousness and education, all cultures and schools of thought will come to realize the power and inherent wisdom of the many great Native American philosophers and philosophies and begin to draw on this ancient wisdom to imbue it into the collective world philosophy without getting lost in cosmic overload; “Cosmic overload” meaning that Indians are so spiritual we are floating around in the universe, bouncing from star to star to mountain top while flute music plays in the background, an eagle screeches from somewhere romantically distant, with buffalo and horses running across the open plains of our collective conscious.

Native American people have to pay the bills, repair their cars, get along with grouchy neighbors, learn and grow in traditions, in general live in this time with everyone else on mother earth. Indian traditions are grounded, practical, with a sense of humor, spiritual ways of living. The Red Road is a Native American spiritual way of life and, is important to note here as this is how I live my life. I am mixed heritage-multi-ethnic-all-American-mutt, with just enough NDN blood to make me excited and proud. As a kid the only time there was mention of NDN blood in our house hold was when someone was being angry, losing their temper or drinking or going a little crazy (read violent, sad or dangerous here). There are many beautiful ways of being NDN that most of my family had forgotten or never really knew about. As an adult I went on the personal journey of what does it mean to be NDN and have learned much and man! What a beautiful, scary, dangerous, funny, sometimes outta control ride. If it don’t kill ya it’ll make ya tough, or; enlightened…maybe.

My journey was set in good motion decadesago by many elders and peers of knowledge and good character, and maybe some of questionable character. I was struggling to become clean and sober and the red road made my recovery possible. The Red Road is living in ones own spiritual and cultural ways. This is a term of endearment for learning to walk with a moccasin in each world; meaning the NDN world and the Whiteman’s world; although today my dress shoes and my moccasins are multi-tasking like mad.

A Lakota elder explained that red is an expression of purity, and sacrifice. In Lakota mythology; red is blood it represents purity. White is the mythology of the European peoples. We know and have always known that blood purifies and carries all nutrition into the body and poisons out of the body, it also moves the life force around inside us. And when blood spills out it turns black. Black does not necessarily represent death or evil but the black road is not healthy. This is my interpretation of what I have been taught and have learned over the years. This article is designed to help inspire and teach people who are young on their spiritual journey. I have done my best to be a bridge between the many worlds that live on Turtle Island today. I don’t profess to be so great in my own right (well maybe a little), but I will say that in spiritual culture we all contribute in some way to the collective ideas and the collective philosophy. And what I have written here is simply what I have learned in my life. I guess you could say it is plagiarism at its best. They say a true artist steals others work and makes it their own. I hope I have done that well here, giving honor and respect to all the teachers of my life.

Human life on our planet is in trouble and we need to be alert to the “medicine” and traditions that can help pull our fat out of the fire. We have seen so much subversion, lies and manipulation for too many generations by some big banker families, world leaders, and sociopath geniuses rising to power; that I have to ask, in real simple terms…. Are you “fed” up?

We need to retrieve our indigenous consciousness, we are all indigenous to mother earth and we are hurtling through space on her…together. We can reach into our DNA and shake it up to learn from the past, from the right now and from somewhere and something, the great mystery, of unlimited consciousness that is always there. I am saying we can learn and expand and allow each other to be who we are “walk the way we walk” and not lose our self in the process. Some might call this tolerance, I call it allowance. We can allow each other to be. It is rooted in spiritual confidence that is neither right nor wrong and yet I am confident, sure and know my spiritual nature and way of life. A simple look at our relatives on mother earth shows us this; that tree allows that frog, and the clouds allow that horse, and so on. The other relatives on mother earth don’t need to push their way on someone else. Only for food and not for genocide or might is right.

We have a responsibility to understand ourselves, and the times we live in. Many of us were part of the 1960’s spiritual blast from the Great Mystery, and now we are the elders from that time. We all felt something and the social upheaval; politics, art, and chaos of that time were a response to the spiritual-religio-quantum-physics-great mystery-life-force release from the center of the universe. It was a wave of consciousness pulsing through the mother earth and particularly here on Turtle Island. We responded at the time through many groups, organizations and “movements” to recreate a better society. Including but not limited to; the AIM movement, the women’s’ movement, the black panthers, the environmental movement to name just a few. And some of the crazy, I mean crazy grasping at drugs, wild sex, and other such eccentricities, to find some kind of better way of living. We all heard the call. We watched it on TV for crisake. Many responded, some inhaled, some never exhaled and …many went back to sleep.

Now as elders from that era it is our sacred duty to respond to the current troubles with compassion, courage, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, humor, humility, abundance and persistence. These current troubles are huge and out of control. The families and businesses that control society and money (read the big investors, corporations, religious institutions and politicians all fighting for financial and military control) have lost touch with their own indigenousness. They have forgotten how to be on mother earth, and how to treat all of life with respect. It is time for us to speak up and reach out and step up. Listen to the advice of Native American peoples, and other indigenous people from around the world, especially the grandmothers. There is a combined consciousness of ancient wisdom, science, current experience, and patience that is inherent in all earth based way of thinking. Grow a garden, share food and shelter with people around the world, build green consciousness, protect the forests, be kind to each other, create and recreate health and help from all that your life has taught you, because we are all related.

Helpful Tips to Fight Depression

One of the characteristics of depression and anxiety is thinking in ways that prevent effective action and progress with one’s concerns, often by avoiding one’s real concerns through distraction, escape, and self-medication. Once these ineffective/ self-sabotaging patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting become ingrained, they can be very difficult to change. Here are some tips to try to pull yourself back up before it gets too bad.

1. Stop acting according to how you feel at the moment. Start acting according to how you want to feel in the future.

I certainly know how to talk myself out of things. When I say to myself, “I’m too tired”, “I don’t feel like it now”, “I’ll do it tomorrow”, I’m well on my way to avoiding effective action – and it’s usually about something that would be good for me, such as going to the gym or finishing some necessary tasks. What about you? How do you do it?

Too often we cling to the familiar rather than learn to tolerate the discomfort of change. If you just listen to how you feel, you’ll very likely keep on doing what you’ve always done, and getting the same results you’ve always gotten. Or as the saying goes, “Insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results”.

To feel better, you have to act better. You have to find ways to begin to deconstruct your less than healthy patterns. That will feel “unnatural” to you because it will involve changing. But if you begin acting as the person you want to be, you’ll start feeling the way you want to feel. Even if you can change only one thing, it can give you a feeling of achievement and empowerment to do the next best thing, and the next…

2. Don’t believe everything you think!

With anxiety and depression, people somehow believe that their thoughts of doom, gloom, fear and self-blame are accurate accounts of “reality” – and that they really should feel and believe the ways they do. Actually, our thought patterns and beliefs are nothing more than patterns of thinking and feeling that we’ve learned to create and reinforce over time. But they may bear little resemblance to outside reality – that which is happening outside of our heads, where the rest of the world lives. If you don’t agree, consider encountering people who have very different opinions or reactions than yours. Why is it that seemingly intelligent people can be so different in their views? Why don’t we all agree on the same version of “reality”?

Understand that what you’re thinking and feeling right now is transitory; it changes from minute to minute. So don’t give so much power to something so fleeting. Don’t go to your bad mood or depressed thinking for advice and guidance on how you should act. Better yet, consider that the ways you think and feel right now may be the biggest cause of your problems. Just as you would not take the advice of a depressed or self destructive friend, don’t believe the thoughts and feelings that tell you to act in ineffective or self-destructive ways.

3. You’re feelings don’t matter. Who cares how you feel?

Don’t do things because you feel like it, do things because they’re good for you! Basing your action, or inaction, or ineffective/ self-sabotaging actions on your automatic and fleeting thoughts and moods is like giving your car keys to a two year old, or a moody teenager. Ever wonder why you’re not getting where you need to go in life?

If you want your life to “go better”, you’ll have to do something – it won’t be done for you. And that means you have to take better control of your mind – the place where most of your unhappiness is occurring. Of course “bad” things happen in our lives, but most depressed and anxious people are suffering internally despite external circumstances that they could feel good about. I’ve often heard clients say, “I don’t know why I feel so depressed. I have a nice home, a good spouse, smart children, a decent job…”

Of course there are those of us whose circumstances really are pretty bad – loss of job, home, family, health… But depression and anxiety can take hold of these bad circumstances and make them much worse through self-blame, hopelessness, fear of trying, negative predictions that things will always be as bad… If you’ve ever met a person in terrible circumstances who is optimistic, or someone in great circumstances who is depressed, you know that circumstances are not everything. So much has to do with our attitude towards our external conditions. Often the best course of action when things are not going well is to be upbeat and forward moving despite our circumstances.

4. Act into the way you want your life to be. Fake it ’til you make it.

If your negative, fearful thoughts are already steering you wrong by giving you inaccurate information about reality, and they’re causing you to feel awful, what can you use a guidance system to inform your actions? Developing a positive plan of action based on your goals and values can provide a good map to follow.

Your values are the things you really believe in and think are important. Getting in touch with them can be enlivening and inspiring because it feels like getting in touch with who you really are. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel enlivened and inspired? Our values also provide a rudder that help us steer our way through life and relationships. Also, clarifying our values can provide much needed confrontation to behaviors that contradict them. If I say that close and loving relationships are important to me, but I spend all my time playing video games, watching TV, or drinking, chances are I’m lying to myself and doing things that will actually prevent me from forming or maintaining healthy relationships.

Likewise with goals. If you say you want a good paying job, but are too afraid or negative to apply for jobs, you’re acting against your stated goals. This is self-sabotage. The only person that can correct this is you. Don’t expect others to somehow find that better job for you. Confronting yourself in an honest fashion can help you get motivated. Just be sure not to destroy or demotivate yourself with heaps of self-blame.Once you identify your most important values and goals, it’s up to you to act in accordance with them. This is where some of the above tips come into play. Don’t pay attention to the voices of fear and negativity that will naturally arise once you set a goal. I said naturally. Your negative voices have become what’s natural to you, probably through years of dedicated practice. You’ve become an expert in keeping yourself in the same rut by thinking the same way over and over. You must commit “unnatural acts” to get out of that rut. It won’t feel comfortable. But, who cares? You shouldn’t. You already don’t feel comfortable, with your circumstances or your moods. So what’s to lose by feeling uncomfortable while you’re doing something constructive? Would that be so awful? Do you think you couldn’t survive such a terrible thing? Try it and see.

Small Steps Take Us the Greatest Distance

By Jenny Flintoft

When babies learn to walk, we congratulate every tiny step, every courageous wobble. We cheer all those tiny pieces of progress they make… Isn’t it funny how we don’t give ourselves that same encouragement and support as adults? Just because we’re “officially” grown up (and I reserve the right to be a big kid whenever I want!), we set ourselves mammoth tasks to achieve and then get disheartened when progress is slow!

The more I work with people who show a desire in “getting better” (whether that’s to be better in dealing with a challenging situation, better at leading others, better at dealing with difficult people), the more I have seen that grand gestures very rarely make the difference that lasts. It is those small steps – in and amongst the wobbles but constantly focused on “getting better” – which lead to sustained, meaningful change.

Here’s the trouble with people like me(!) I run events, workshops and seminars where I’m delighted to say I enable people to feel motivated, fired up and ready for change. I have testimonials and videos and emails from people who have left feeling they’ve had a real awakening and are going off to rock their worlds! Yay! LOVE that!

But what can sometimes happen after people attend an event, or a teleseminar, or read a self help book is they have the rush…..and then the comedown. Within a couple of weeks they think to themselves – “I’m no further forward. Nothing’s changed. That course/book/expert isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. This stuff DOESN’T WORK.” (Ever experienced that? Be honest!)

Being positive and focused on this stuff for one day or one week won’t do it. Doing twenty push ups a day isn’t going to give you a washboard stomach overnight (more’s the pity – sheesh). You’ve got to keep doing it, putting the effort and energy in – and only then will you start to see a return and some big changes in your life that you didn’t even notice happening at the time.

This is where a bit of patience comes in. You all know the principle of sowing and reaping, I’m sure. You reap the harvest after you’ve done the work. You dig the soil, plant the seeds, water the seeds (effort), wait a while (patience) and then you reap your harvest. Effort + patience = results/reward.

In this day and age, this principle is lost on people. We’ve lost the art of patience. So people ask – “If I plant my seeds today and put the work in, what do I get tomorrow?” And of course the answer is – wet seeds! Instant results are so rarely seen – we need to put in the consistent small action steps in order to see our results.

You don’t eat a meal in one gulp, you eat it one mouthful at a time. It’s exactly the same with these actions.

Pick something small – it may even seem insignificant – that you can work on. Get it into your skin and into your psyche. Then choose something else and do the same. Keep chipping away over a period of time and you’ll be surprised at how all those little steps and actions add up.

With small, simple actions, NO effort is wasted.

Whenever you try any action at first, it can seem as if you’re putting in loads of effort for very little return. Keep persevering, because all those actions and small steps added together and layered on top of one another will bring you the progress and the difference you’ve been seeking in your chosen area. And that’s a promise!

And now I’d like to invite you to claim your FREE (Re)Ignite Your SPARK Power Pack, including Comprehensive Action Guide, Podcast and Illustrated Summary Sheet. Immediate download!

The Law of Attraction, Five Things To Check If It Is Not Working

By Angelica Young

We have all experienced getting something we really wanted in life whether it was small or big. We then wondered whether it was luck or because we wanted it so much we found a way to get it. Thoughts become things and what you really want from the heart you will get. But… It doesn’t mean that it will show up immediately. We do have to work on attracting our goals and desires and the way we do this is by feeling and being grateful. If you have been trying to manifest your creation for quite some time and nothing seems to be happening and you have thoroughly gone through your check list it’s time to let go and leave the universe to carry out your wishes by leaving the outcome to manifest on its own. This is another method which gives our minds a break from concentrating non-stop but does the same job but in a different order. You could be thinking what an earth is this woman talking about is she mad? We all know the key to manifestation is to think about our goals as much as possible but if you dare to let go and not put demands on the universe by saying “I can’t live without it” or something similar it will manifest because of you are leaving it up to your belief and trust. Simply it means do not care whether you have it or not. Do not use emotional blackmail with the universe because it will ignore you.

Be happy with the bad things and the good things
When bad things happen we learn from them and become stronger even though at the time it makes us feel unhappy so we must be grateful for the experience. For example if we have made a mistake we will definitely not do it again. When the good things happen we must always be grateful to give out postive vibrations that we want more

Reiterate your happiness, feel it and say thank you
Feel the happiness, put a smile on your face and be grateful for even the smallest of things that have given us pleasure. Show others how upbeat you feel and how happy you are with a particular situation. The happy feelings you have will let of wonderful vibrations to the extent of helping others but creating a happy bubble around you. Lastly please say thank you. We are all to happy to curse the world when things go wrong but do we actually give thanks when things go right? Always remember the universe creates balance so we must create balance in our own lives for this to work.

Know why you want it
Be clear in your goals right down to the tiniest detail. Clarity will play a huge part in manifesting your desires but will also put you on a level of certainty rather than being indecisive. The universe needs to know exactly what it is you want or it will get confused and won’t be able to manifest anything.

Your Brain is Neutral
Be careful regarding your thoughts. Your brain is neutral and works exactly the same way as the universe. Positive brings positive and negative brings negative. What you don’t want are thoughts that start getting buried in your subconscious which are negative because the impact on your desired manifestations will be zero.

You have to do some work to make it work
Make sure you tick off your checklist and you are doing everything you should. Check that you are using the 12 Laws of the universe and you are doing your grateful list in the morning and evening and make sure you have your key at all times.
