Spotting Alzheimer’s Early

By Daniel Hickey

With November being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, this is the perfect time for us to address the early signs of Alzheimer’s, which are typically first noted by family members as well as loved ones of the person who exhibits them. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 10 signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia to look for:

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. This includes forgetting recently learned information or important dates. Names and appointments may be forgotten, then remembered later.

2. Challenges in planning or solving problems. This often involves changes in the ability to develop and follow a plan (i.e., written instructions or a recipe), and difficulty working with numbers (i.e., keeping track of bills).

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks. Maybe it becomes difficult to drive to a familiar place, or the rules of a favorite card game are completely forgotten. There may also be a noticeable decline in hygiene habits.

4. Confusion with time or place. People with Alzheimer’s may forget where they are, or be confused about the season of the year. Understanding the passage of time generally becomes more difficult.

5. Trouble with visual images and spatial relationships. This may manifest itself while reading, judging distance while driving or not recognizing one’s own reflection in a mirror.

6. New problems with words. Following and joining a conversation becomes more difficult, and repeating oneself becomes more common. An individual with early signs of Alzheimer’s may struggle to find the proper words to articulate themselves and may call things or people by the wrong name.

7. Misplacing objects. People with Alzheimer’s may put things in odd places, or lose objects and be unable to retrace their steps to find them. This is common with familiar possessions like eyewear, keys or a telephones.

8. Decreased or poor judgment. It is common for people with Alzheimer’s to lose their ability to use good judgment or make wise decisions. This makes them especially susceptible to those who would take advantage of their vulnerability (i.e., telemarketers and other salespeople).

9. Withdrawal. A person with Alzheimer’s may abandon hobbies or shun social activities, either intentionally or because of memory loss about the activity.

10. Changes in mood. For loved ones, this is one of the most difficult changes to witness. People with Alzheimer’s may exhibit very significant personality changes and show more frequent signs of confusion, depression, anxiety and suspicion.

When a person presents several of these signs concurrently, it may be time for family members to schedule an Alzheimer’s and dementia screening. Whether the diagnosis is dementia, which is the syndrome associated with a decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills – or Alzheimer’s, which is the most common form of dementia – the symptoms are generally irreversible and will progress over time. But with proper intervention, the visible signs of both conditions can be managed in a way that is beneficial to the person experiencing them.

In some families, the intervention begins with at-home caregiving supplemented by regular visits to the patient’s physician. While this may be a suitable solution in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia, but as time progresses and the need for 24-hour care becomes more apparent, the next option for long-term care is assisted living in a memory care facility.

A quality memory care facility will be staffed by professionals who skillfully and respectfully care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients on both “good days” and “bad days.” Ideally, a memory care community will provide the patient with a secure, stimulating environment that encourages maintaining assisted independence for as long as possible. The best memory care facilities have the flexibility to cater to various levels of care, ranging from early memory loss to the final stages of Alzheimer’s. Preferably, a memory care facility should offer:

– Wellness programs that stimulate the senses

– Interventions designed to improve communication and mood Activities that encourage physical activity and social interaction

This may include daily group activities such as:

– Fitness classes

– Outings and excursions

– Music therapy Arts and crafts

– Reading, movies and slideshows

– Planned social gatherings

Another desirable characteristic of a memory care facility is an area that features stations for residents to mimic daily life activities and tasks from the past. Examples of these stations may include a:

– Library and movie theater

– Flower and vegetable garden

– Work bench with safe tools

Baby nursery with dolls

– Community pet area

– Bird aviary or fish aquarium

In addition to these amenities, the hallmarks of memory care communities include as-needed assisted living services such as housekeeping, laundry, bathing and dressing assistance, dietary guidance, escort services to offsite appointments and activities and appointment coordination. There should be a staff of licensed nurses who provide 24-hour medical assistance, and a physician who provides the residents’ scheduled checkups, along with specialist referrals as necessary.

When families first recognize the signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia in a loved one, that is the best time to begin researching memory care facility options. This will give them more time to find a safe, supportive memory care living environment in their local area.

4 Step Exercise Regime To Lose Weight

By Jon Allo

One of the main factors why people stop or lose interest in their exercise plan is because they create regimens that are too hard to follow. Regular exercise has both instant and long-lasting results and with an easy to follow weight loss exercise plan helps you to keep with the plan and makes it more enjoyable. Here’s how to design a sustainable weight loss exercise plan in 4 easy steps.

1. Make It Fun.

You need to be able to enjoy what you’re doing when you exercise to reduce weight. You don’t want your workout to become a chore. If it does start to feel like that you’ll soon give it up. When you start weight loss exercise plan, rather than trying to do the best possible workout right away, aim to fill your workout timetable with energetic activities that you enjoy. This will help get you into the habit of exercising and having fun, without the workout being something you dislike.

2. Don’t Overestimate Yourself.

People practically always overestimate their own capability to exercise and keep to a new weight loss exercise plan. It’s the reason why so many people get a new gym membership at the beginning of a new year and then never follow it through. Start your workout regime at 30% less than you think you can deal with and then work your way up from there. Then, rather than feeling guilty that you have not reached your goals, when you underestimate you’ll feel good about outperforming your goals.

3. Don’t Keep Doing The Same Routine.

When you constantly do the same type of exercise routine you’ll most likely get bored of it quite quickly. So add some variety to your routine. Try a new sport every few weeks, or try a different type of workout. If you usually exercise in a group class try something on your own or visa versa. Another way you can add variety is with different styles of workout music. The type of music you play during your exercise program can have a big effect on your workout experience.

4. Put It In Your Diary.

Your weight loss exercise plan need to be treated with the same importance as a real meeting with a friend or business contact. Once your workout is in your schedule don’t cancel it. Marking down your workouts into your diary is a major element of following through. If it’s only in your mind, it’s easy to miss your workouts or reschedule them. Don’t be embarrassed about sharing your schedule with your work colleagues, friends or family. If you were going out of the office for a lunch, you would tell someone and it should be the same when you go for your workout.

Urgent Humanitarian Message To You, Your Family and Friends

By Paul A Philips

The world about you is nothing more than an illusion. Your life is a movie starring, scripted and directed by YOU: Your thoughts, feelings, emotions and attitude i.e. ‘where you are consciously at’ is the script, while the world ‘out there’ is the cine projector which beams back onto your brain, the silver screen.

Choice through empowerment

Given that the world is an illusion of your own making what are you going to make of it? You have 2 choices. Which movie will you make manifest: The hell on Earth scenario by choosing the dark side or heaven on Earth having made a commitment to spreading the love, peace and light?

1. Choosing the dark side

Will you choose a life based on ‘service to self?’ A life predicated on ego, recognition and attention seeking… easily seduced by money, sex and power? -What about the karmic consequences smacking back at you for going into this agreement?

Or, equally dark, are you going to consciously create a world for yourself, family and friends based on victimhood where the movie will reflect anxiety, fear, anger, pain and trauma..? What will be the patterns here if you choose the slave agreement, victimhood? Do you love your own servitude?

If you’re a victim then you may want to stop reading here: One of the hallmarks of victims is that they will not allow themselves to be contributed to and the purpose of this piece is what follows next, a contribution in the form of enlightenment. -How to create a life that’s nurturing and fulfilling, one that makes a difference to everyone. Victims perceive contribution as a threat to maintaining their victimhood…

2. Choosing the side of love, peace and light

As the spiritual war ensues many people are waking up to the realization of who the dark side’s world elite rulers are and their evil agenda, to enslave humanity. If you’re one of these people in the realization are you doing anything about it? If not, then does it take the well to run dry for you to finally cry out water shortage? Bearing in mind the gravity of the situation, the unimaginably dire consequences if the dark side have their way; apathy besides ignorance is no excuse: Contrary to the dark side’s belief all the resources needed to create a world based on love, peace and light ARE available.

So, this is my clarion call, an appeal to all, to choose the side of love peace and light. As the song goes, link like ‘brothers in arms,’ join the team of co-creators needed to stop the dark side’s evil machinations.

Peaceful activism

The way to achieve the heaven on Earth scenario is through peaceful activism. A few words about this, activism, be it through focussing on the appropriate thoughts, meditations, prayers, the laws of attraction, non-compliance and spreading the word… all contributes to creating the desired outcome. It works synergistically: The more people focussing on this energy, putting it into the human morphogenetic field the greater the effect, hence, the dark side’s weakness, being outnumbered.

In conclusion

Given that the world is an illusion brought on by your own making will you interpret this as an urgent humanitarian message to choose the side of love, peace and light by way of serving others through peaceful activism? Do the peaceful activism for your family and friends.

…And what about your children or their children to be? What sort of a future will they have if nothing is done? What will your reply be when they come of age, only to learn how much their freedom has been restricted and then ask you were you doing anything to stop this from happening?

5 Excuses People Use When They Can’t Lose Belly Fat

By Jon Allo

To lose weight successfully, you have look at the various excuses that you are making and why you are making them. Why do you keep making excuses that you are not at your recommended weight and why you’re not in control of your health? Here are the top 5 excuses for not losing weight and how you can lose weight naturally.

1. You Will Always Be Hungry If You Diet.

Do you think that the only way to lose weight is to remove as many calories as possible from your diet and starve yourself? Starving yourself is not healthy. But is it really that bad to wait until you’re genuinely hungry before eating or eating less at mealtimes? If you do get serious hunger pangs try eating a small portion of something healthy to curb the hunger.

2. You Don’t Think It Will Work For You.

To lose weight naturally you need a healthy weight loss diet and exercise plan. Have you tried lots of different diet and exercises routines and none of them have worked? Remember that rapid weight diets only work for the short term, if at all. Losing weight in today’s fast-food and sedentary society is about changing your lifestyle in a way that works for you.

3. You Like To Eat.

Lots of people like to eat, but they still eat in moderation. Are you eating too many processed foods? Processed foods are those that come in a box, can, bag or carton and often altered to prolong shelf life. This results in little or nutritional value in the food. Instead of potato chips and candies, try including more fruit to your diet. You still get something sweet and fruits generally have significantly less calories than processed fast food.

4. You Don’t Like Healthy Foods.

Losing belly fat does mean that you need to include some fruit and vegetables in your diet. But that doesn’t mean that you have to eat every fruit or vegetable on the planet. Choose a few that you do like and enjoy them more often. Look for recipes and prepare them different ways so they don’t become dull and boring.

5. You’re Heavy Because Of Your Genetics.

It is a fact that a woman’s hormones are different to those of a man. Also, you may have big bones or your family may all be heavy. But are you willing to let these reasons stop you from having a healthy life? Start making healthier food choices and get some physical activity into your day. At the very least it will help you to avoid the serious health problems that may run in your family.

Solve Problems Easier

By Dr Jill Ammon-Wexler

At one time or another most of us have experienced feeling somehow stuck by a problem and uncertain of what to do. This can be very frustrating and unsettling. Here’s a brain-smart solution.

The challenge you face in such a situation is this: How can you move forward when you feel unclear about what to do in the face of the problem? Admittedly, such a lack of clarity can make it hard to find a solution.

Then stress adds fuel to the fire, because it is the exact opposite brain state required to find a solution to your problem. So you find yourself on a seesaw – stressed and feeling stuck – but still knowing you need to DO something.

Your Brain When Challenged

You have bumped up against your brain struggling to deal with an overload from trying to deal with a problem. When life is easy our brains function so smoothly we rarely pay attention to what is happening inside our skull. We primarily operate on an unconscious level as our brain automatically directs our thoughts and actions 95 percent of the time.

Introduce a complex problem with no clear solution and it is natural to begin to feel anxious. Our brain whirls around trying to choose from the possible answers to the problem. But suddenly your mental screen just goes blank and you feel utterly and totally confused.

Working Memory Overload

What just happened?

You overloaded a function of your brain called the “working memory.” Your working memory is a temporary workspace that lets you hold your possible solutions to your problem in mind while you analyze one at a time.

However your working memory has limited storage, and is prone to overload if you are stressed or anxious. In such a situation it can go blank – just like overloading a fuse in your home electrical system.

The Solution to Overcoming Challenges

So what can you do if you feel stressed, confused and uncertain when facing a problem? The only way out of a mind freeze is to choose from among your possible solutions and take action.

Emotion and thinking are closely tied together. Your emotions tell you how important something is to you. They are tied to motivation, since they actually pave the way for our actions.

So getting clear requires cutting through your emotions and putting some clearly focused attention on the problem at hand. Start with an analytical definition of exactly what the problem is.

Balance your choices using focused attention and truthful analysis of the challenge you face. The brain naturally focuses on one thing at a time – avoid the confusion of multi-tasking from one solution to the other in an endless circle. Really dig into each possible solution one at a time. Write down your possible solutions and note the pros and cons of each.

Finally weigh the pros and cons of the possible solutions to your challenge and identify what seems to be the most promising solution.

Take Action

The challenge you might face is: How can I take action without knowing for sure this is the best solution? This may involve just taking a small step in what seems to be the best direction, whether or not you feel certain your solution is the right choice.

There is great power in action. Movement in any direction will break your mind free from the cement of indecision. Your action will provide new information and experiences related to your problem. And since life is so totally unpredictable, who knows how your situation will change once you get into motion.

Even if you move on the wrong solution, at least you will break free of the painful, mind-numbing cement of indecision and come to more clarity!

Information About Teaching Yoga Sessions

Yoga has seen a large increase in popularity over the past decade. There are people who stay in shape by using it as a form of exercise. Others find that it is a great method to reduce stress and relax. It does not matter where a person lives, a yoga class is most likely being taught somewhere in the area. There are many methods an instructor can use as a way to pass on his or her knowledge to students. Here is some important information about teaching yoga sessions:

1. Arrive early for your class

Ideally, you should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes early for all of your classes. This extra time will allow your students to ask questions regarding things you taught in the previous class. If they are having a problem with something in your class, they can get your advice on how to go about fixing the issue. Students will get the most benefit from your class if you maintain a high level of communication with them.

2. Only one topic should be covered in each class

It is common for many instructors of yoga to cover several topics in a single class. There is a belief that the flow of the class is improved by this method of rapid teaching. They are trying to avoid boring their students. However, it is important for instructors to always consider those individuals who are not in good shape and who learn slowly. Certain techniques will take longer for these people to learn. An instructor will need to spend additional time with these people before covering the next exercise on the agenda. Many people who attend yoga classes do not have any knowledge regarding the movements and poses that are frequently used. Therefore, if you attempt to teach many topics in a single class, you will be cheating the students and not providing them with the information they need. Select a single topic and focus on it for the entire class. If you feel the whole class has mastered the topic, feel free to move on to a different topic.

3. Avoid using medical terms when referring to the anatomy

Your students are probably not doctors. It is critical for your students to always understand what you are telling them. If you start throwing medical terminology around in your classes, it will be hard for most students to follow what you are saying. To avoid this, speak as simply as you can. Remember, your goal is to be certain your students are getting the complete benefit of your knowledge. Chest, ribs, lower back, stomach, head and upper back are examples of terms you should be using. This will allow you to be sure your class is always understanding what you are trying to say.

4. Teach your class while walking around the room

It is a mistake to teach yoga while remaining in the front of the room for the entire duration of the class. A more effective method is to walk around the room and engage with the students. This is essential for instructors who have classes containing 50 or more people. Look closely at how your students are performing the exercises and postures you have taught them. If you see they are having a problem, tell them what they are doing wrong and demonstrate the right way. If you simply remain at the front of the room, there will be no way for you to see if students at the back or on the sides are having any difficulties.

3 Simple Tips To Get a Flat Stomach

By Jon Allo

We all lead busy lives and trying to get a flat tummy can be difficult when we eat too much fast food and have little time for exercise. Fundamentally, if you want to know how to get a flatter stomach you have to recognize that you need to get your body to burn more calories that you are consuming. Here are 3 easy tips to get a flat tummy.

1. Check What You’re Eating

Start to keep track of what you eat each day. If you want to get a flat tummy you’re going to have to eat fewer calories than your body burns each day. To begin with, cut down on fizzy drinks and stop eating junk fast foods and you will begin to see a difference. Eat more fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grain foods, foods high in fibre, lean meats and drink plenty of water.

2. Get Your Body Moving!

A sedentary lifestyle will not help you to get a flat tummy. One excuse for people who say they can’t get a flat belly is that they don’t have the time to exercise. But you don’t need to go the gym for hours everyday. Take the stairs, park your car at the far end of the car park or get off one stop early if you’re on public transport. You can burn calories by doing your regular household chores. Vacuuming, washing dishes, and doing laundry are all regular chores that burn fat.

3. Work Your Core Muscles.

Once you are keeping track of what you eat and moving your body more, the last of these 3 tips to get a flat tummy is to begin working your core muscles. Core muscles consist of your abdominal muscles, back muscles and the muscles around your hips.

A quick 10 minute workout would consist of the following exercises. Do 8-10 repetitions of each exercise then move onto the next one. First, lay on your back on the floor and start with full abdominal crunches where your legs also come off of the ground. Follow this with a bridge exercise where you lay on the floor and move your hips up toward the ceiling.

Then do a single leg abdominal press where you again lay on the floor, raise and bend your knee towards your head and push your hand against your knee while using your abdominal muscles to pull your knee toward your hand. Keep your arm straight and hold for 3 deep breaths and then swap to your other leg and hand. Finish with the plank pose where you lay face down, resting on your forearms. Raise up onto your toes and keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels. Hold this position for about 30 seconds.
