The key to personal development is simply willpower. When you decide to better yourself in some way, make sure you establish why you want to improve. Personal development can involve quite a bit of effort, so if you can always remind yourself why you want to continue to develop, you will be able to keep pushing yourself.

Personal development is often the province of aggressive planners. An overly-restrictive plan can be a hindrance to successful personal development, though. Plans need to remain flexible to cope with unexpected obstacles. When strategies prove unsuccessful, plans have to change to embrace alternative ideas. A flexible plan is always superior to a rigid one.

Work on discovering your personal strengths. Try making a list of the ones you know and try making a list of your weaknesses that hold you back from being the strong person that you think you are or could be. Even opinions from others, like friends or family, can give you some insight on how to better yourself.

Figure out what you want to do with yourself. This doesn’t mean that you need to map out your entire life in advance. Consider the next five years. Where do you want to be? What does your life look like? If you evaluate this vision you can pull apart the layers and determine the best course of action to get where you need to be.

Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help with your work. This can be very difficult if you are a person who has become used to doing everything themselves, but you need to learn to reach out and work with others. This is especially true if you work in a field that thrives on collaboration for group projects. You would be surprised at how much your group can get done.

In order to be successful with your journey of personal development, you need to have a sound foundation from which to build upon. Your success is determined by your own self image and confidence levels. These are two easy things you can boost, which will in turn assist you in successfully identifying all the things you would like to improve upon in your life.

Focusing on one or more of these personal development strategies is a great way for people to improve their lives. Anyone stuck in a rut and unhappy with the state of their life would be wise to apply these suggestions assiduously. Why wait any longer to be the person you’ve always wanted to be?

Get Productive With These Awesome Tips

Heuristics are rules intended to help you solve problems. When a problem is large or complex, and the optimal solution is unclear, applying a heuristic allows you to begin making progress towards a solution even though you can’t visualize the entire path from your starting point. Heuristics have many practical applications, and one of my favorite areas of application is personal productivity. Suppose your goal is to climb to the peak of a mountain, but there’s no trail to follow. An example of a heuristic would be: Head directly towards the peak until you reach an obstacle you can’t cross. Whenever you reach such an obstacle, follow it around to the right until you’re able to head towards the peak once again. This isn’t the most intelligent or comprehensive heuristic, but in many cases it will work just fine, and you’ll eventually reach the peak.

Heuristics don’t guarantee you’ll find the optimal solution, nor do they generally guarantee a solution at all. But they do a good enough job of solving certain types of problems to be useful. Their strength is that they break the deadlock of indecision and get you into action. As you take action you begin to explore the solution space, which deepens your understanding of the problem. As you gain knowledge about the problem, you can make course corrections along the way, gradually improving your chances of finding a solution. If you try to solve a problem you don’t initially know how to solve, you’ll often figure out a solution as you go, one you never could have imagined until you started moving. This is especially true with creative work such as software development. Often you don’t even know exactly what you’re trying to build until you start building it.

Productivity heuristics are behavioral rules (some general, some situation-specific) that can help us get things done more efficiently. Here are some of my favorites:

Daily goals. Without a clear focus, it’s too easy to succumb to distractions. Set targets for each day in advance. Decide what you’ll do; then do it.

Timeboxing. Give yourself a fixed time period, like 30 minutes, to make a dent in a task. Don’t worry about how far you get. Just put in the time.

Pareto. The Pareto principle is the 80-20 rule, which states that 80% of the value of a task comes from 20% of the effort. Focus your energy on that critical 20%, and don’t overengineer the non-critical 80%.

Promise. Tell others of your commitments, since they’ll help hold you accountable.

Continuum. At the end of your workday, identify the first task you’ll work on the next day, and set out the materials in advance. The next day begin working on that task immediately.

Randomize. Pick a totally random piece of a larger project, and complete it. Pay one random bill. Make one phone call. Write page 42 of your book.

Cross-pollination. Sign up for martial arts, start a blog, or join an improve group. You’ll often encounter ideas in one field that can boost your performance in another.

Gratitude. When someone does you a good turn, send a thank-you card. That’s a real card, not an e-card. This is rare and memorable, and the people you thank will be eager to bring you more opportunities.

Zone out. Enter the zone of peak creativity, and watch your output soar.

Scotty. Estimate how long a task will take to complete. Then start a timer, and push yourself to complete it in half that time.

Small Steps Take Us the Greatest Distance

When babies learn to walk, we congratulate every tiny step, every courageous wobble. We cheer all those tiny pieces of progress they make… Isn’t it funny how we don’t give ourselves that same encouragement and support as adults? Just because we’re “officially” grown up (and I reserve the right to be a big kid whenever I want!), we set ourselves mammoth tasks to achieve and then get disheartened when progress is slow!

The more I work with people who show a desire in “getting better” (whether that’s to be better in dealing with a challenging situation, better at leading others, better at dealing with difficult people), the more I have seen that grand gestures very rarely make the difference that lasts. It is those small steps – in and amongst the wobbles but constantly focused on “getting better” – which lead to sustained, meaningful change.

Here’s the trouble with people like me(!) I run events, workshops and seminars where I’m delighted to say I enable people to feel motivated, fired up and ready for change. I have testimonials and videos and emails from people who have left feeling they’ve had a real awakening and are going off to rock their worlds! Yay! LOVE that!

But what can sometimes happen after people attend an event, or a teleseminar, or read a self help book is they have the rush…..and then the comedown. Within a couple of weeks they think to themselves – “I’m no further forward. Nothing’s changed. That course/book/expert isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. This stuff DOESN’T WORK.” (Ever experienced that? Be honest!)

Being positive and focused on this stuff for one day or one week won’t do it. Doing twenty push ups a day isn’t going to give you a washboard stomach overnight (more’s the pity – sheesh). You’ve got to keep doing it, putting the effort and energy in – and only then will you start to see a return and some big changes in your life that you didn’t even notice happening at the time.

This is where a bit of patience comes in. You all know the principle of sowing and reaping, I’m sure. You reap the harvest after you’ve done the work. You dig the soil, plant the seeds, water the seeds (effort), wait a while (patience) and then you reap your harvest. Effort + patience = results/reward.

In this day and age, this principle is lost on people. We’ve lost the art of patience. So people ask – “If I plant my seeds today and put the work in, what do I get tomorrow?” And of course the answer is – wet seeds! Instant results are so rarely seen – we need to put in the consistent small action steps in order to see our results.

You don’t eat a meal in one gulp, you eat it one mouthful at a time. It’s exactly the same with these actions.

Pick something small – it may even seem insignificant – that you can work on. Get it into your skin and into your psyche. Then choose something else and do the same. Keep chipping away over a period of time and you’ll be surprised at how all those little steps and actions add up.

With small, simple actions, NO effort is wasted.

Whenever you try any action at first, it can seem as if you’re putting in loads of effort for very little return. Keep persevering, because all those actions and small steps added together and layered on top of one another will bring you the progress and the difference you’ve been seeking in your chosen area. And that’s a promise!
